International Youth Forum on Post-Colonial Future held in Baku
On April 30 – May 1, an international Youth Forum titled “Empowering Youth for a Post-Colonial Future” was held in Baku, organized by the Baku Initiative Group.
For the first time, the forum brought together a diverse group of young participants, including diplomats, researchers, international law experts, healthcare professionals, representatives of pro-independence political movements, youth organization leaders, and university students from current and former colonies. Nearly 80 participants from 34 countries attended the event, alongside foreign students and researchers studying at higher education institutions in Azerbaijan.
The first day of the forum featured a series of institutional visits, offering participants the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into Azerbaijan’s governance and public service model. Delegates visited ADA University, ASAN Service, the DOST Agency, and Milli Majlis (National Assembly), where they engaged in discussions with young leaders and members of parliament. The program also included a debate competition among international participants, fostering dynamic exchanges of ideas on key global issues.
The second day began with an opening ceremony marked by a flash mob performance by participants. A video message of support from the United Nations Youth Office was delivered. Throughout the day, participants presented on pressing political and social challenges affecting post-colonial societies.
An interactive session moderated by Professor Murat Ozkaleli focused on the implications of artificial intelligence for international relations and global security, as well as progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
As a conclusion of the forum, participants adopted a decision to establish the Global South Youth Platform. The Platform aims to give a stronger voice to young people, encourage open and inclusive dialogue, build cooperation across regions, strengthen mutual contacts and networking, and address the lasting colonial barriers that continue to limit collaboration among youth, supporting them in shaping a fairer and more equal post-colonial world.
