International Conference on Reunion Island was held in Baku. January 21, 2024, Baku Azerbaijan
January 21, 2025, an international conference dedicated to Réunion Island, a French colony, was held jointly organized by the Baku Initiative Group and the Ka Ubuntu Organization which is struggling for the independence of Réunion Island.
The international conference titled Internationale Conference on
“The Independence of Reunion: Reassessing France's Colonial Heritage and the Path to Sovereignty” brought together political leaders fighting for the independence of the people of Réunion, researchers, NGO leaders, renowned human rights defenders, as well as leading experts on decolonization and media representatives.
The conference highlighted, with factual evidence, the economic, political, and social consequences of the colonial legacy in Réunion, including significant obstacles imposed by the French government on the local people's efforts for independence and freedom. From an economic perspective, Réunion’s substantial dependence on France has contributed to the decline of local production, the exacerbation of poverty, and a rise in unemployment rates. Politically, the conference underscored how administrative restrictions imposed by France have severely limited the people of Réunion’s right to self-determination and their participation in decision-making processes.
The event featured discussions on the potential implementation of international legal mechanisms to secure global recognition of Réunion’s sovereignty, as well as prospects for cooperation with relevant international organizations. Furthermore, the conference participants emphasized the significance of coordinated global efforts and legal support in securing the recognition of the rights of the people of Réunion.
At the conference, the Baku Initiative Group and the "Ka-Ubuntu" independence movement, a central force in the fight for Réunion's freedom, signed a memorandum of understanding. This agreement focuses on supporting the decolonization process and fostering collaborative international initiatives between the two organizations.
Another key highlight of the event was the strategic decision made by the Ka-Ubuntu independence movement to join the International Decolonization Front in order to strengthen global support for the independence struggle of the people of Réunion. This move holds significant importance in defending the rights of the people of Réunion and in the fight to dismantle French colonialism.
At the conclusion of the event, a media briefing was conducted and the questions addressed by the media representatives were responded.
