During WUF 13, Baku Initiative Group organised an event titled “Colonial Injustice and Housing Shortage”
May 19, within the framework of the 13th Session of the United Nations World Urban Forum (WUF 13), Baku Initiative Group (BIG) organised an event at Pavilion A39 titled “Colonial Injustice and Housing Shortage”
The event brought together members of the Global South Youth Platform, representing both extant and formerly colonised territories, encompassing early-career researchers, practitioners specialising in international law, professionals from the field of public health, delegates affiliated with pro-independence political parties and civil society organisations, as well as executives of youth-led organisations.
The guest speakers discussed the deep socioeconomic consequences brought by colonial and neocolonial systems of governance, the structural inequalities arising from rapid urbanisation, the pressing challenges facing housing provision, as well as the wide-ranging and complex effects that these interconnected factors have on local and indigenous populations.
During their addresses, participants expressed their appreciation for Azerbaijan's particular attention to this global issue and its role in providing a platform for discussions on the matter. They noted that such initiatives are of great importance in deepening international dialogue, promoting fair and inclusive urban development, as well as strengthening cooperation in the areas of global justice and sustainable development.
