Constructing Empires: Colonial Ideologies and Realities
June 3, 2025, an international scientific conference titled “Constructing Empires: Colonial Ideologies and Realities” was held in the capital, Baku, organized by Baku Initiative Group.
This event constituted the inaugural international conference bringing together experts operating within various United Nations structures focused on decolonization, alongside leading scholars specializing in the field. Participants included seasoned UN decolonization experts, distinguished academics with experience in France’s former and current colonial territories, recognized authorities in international law, ambassadors accredited to the Republic of Azerbaijan, members of parliament, and other high-level officials.
The conference focused on the severe consequences of colonial policies, the treatment of nations under the control of colonial powers, the discriminatory methods applied, as well as the political, economic, and cultural constraints that are part of neocolonialism. The deliberate erasure of national identity was also examined through scientific and methodological approaches.
Discussions were held on how colonial powers have obstructed the implementation of the decolonization process as required by international law and UN resolutions. The conference also explored the use of existing mechanisms within international organizations, the implementation of effective strategies, and possible solutions to systemic inequalities at the international level.
It is noteworthy that, on the second day of the visit, the guests delivered academic lectures to faculty and students at ADA University and the Azerbaijan University of Languages, addressing the topic “The Continuation of Colonial Thinking in the Modern International Relations System.”
